And yes, you should run OnyX every once in awhile or if it's needed. Personally, I haven't found it to fix anything I was expecting it to the last few times I have run it, and it sure can add to one's workload reentering all one's various logins and passwords etc. And getting things to work normally again. Just an occasional boot using Safe Boot Mode can cleanup almost just as much and without adding all the extra work thanks. Onyx is certainly NOT on my list of ' must use' utilities any longer.

Personally, I haven't found it to fix anything I was expecting it to the last few times I have run it, and it sure can add to one's workload reentering all one's various logins and passwords etc. And getting things to work normally again. Have you run it lately? Most of the utilities that were included in the maintenance cleanup are no longer there. It does not remove passwords or logins and as far as I can remember, it never did for me.

Yes, Safe Mode will clean caches and run a disk check on your hard drive or SSD and limits kexts, startup items, etc. Both OnyX and Safe Mode have their uses.

Hey, what do want for free? Your money back? Yes, I ran it just a week or so ago and had to reenter all my usernames and passwords for all sites like this one and for some other stuff as well. And it didn't even improve or fix anything.

Patrick ======Then something is not working right if that's the case. Like I said, I just ran it this afternoon and it did not remove usernames and passwords for this site or any other. And again, I don't ever remember it doing that even with older versions unless you specifically chose an item in its utilities to do so. But since you're not running Mojave (or maybe not even High Sierra), you must be using an older version of OnyX where removing those items was an option.

We have always warned folks about using the auto setting in OnyX and not choosing options that they did not need or understand. Correct Charlie, I was and usually am running Mavericks and I have never run Onyx in anything other than it's auto mode and never used any of its customized options. Maybe next time I have it open I'll take a look and see what it might have set regarding logins and passwords. As I recall it used to do the same thing with Snow Leopard which is a different version, so I assumed that is what it normally did in it's auto mode in Mavericks as well.

Thanks for the info. - Patrick ======.

There are two concepts that a lot of computer users confuse together. Maintenance ('cleaning'), and troubleshooting. Years ago, there were some maintenance routines that were a good idea to to. Over the years, Apple has improved OS X so that newer versions can do those routines automatically. Some old users may keep thinking you need to run maintenance programs, but newer Macs don't need them. Onyx and others are good for troubleshooting, though. If there is something not quite right with the Mac in a certain area, like fonts, Onyx and other utilities can sometimes have tools that can help, like rebuilding the font cache.

But those actions are not normally needed under typical use. Onyx and similar utilities have another function: Customization. Id for custom heads minecraft mac download.

They provide access to many features that are not exposed in OS X's own preferences, like how fast you want sheets to appears or setting the location and format for how you want screen shots to be saved. But again, that is not 'cleaning.' So there you have it.

Onyx is not really needed for maintenance. It is used for troubleshooting and customization. Just use your Mac normally and it will take care of itself.

The only thing a user really needs to remember these days is to keep around 20% of the hard drive empty so that there is room for temporary files and other operational and self-maintenance routines like swap files, auto-defragging, and local Time Machine backups.
