July 12, 2018 I was on the verge of getting rid of my old iMac 2011 as a workhorse for editing because it bogged down so easily. I didn't want to take the risk of installing an internal SSD and pulling apart such an old machine, fearing some bits would be more fragile. I'd looked into external enclosures and carefully researched how much faster a thunderbolt drive would be than the FireWire800 (I already use with a Drobo). However, I use a 2nd monitor and all the small drive solutions were end-of-chain with a single port. With the Dock I was able to put a 500GB SSD in there AND daisy-chain to my display.

* Amazon's listing of the 'LaCie USB 3.0 PCI Express Card' suggests Mac compatibility, but LaCie's data sheet only says it works with Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7. Am waiting for a clarification from their Tech Support office. Yeah, I know, it’s a USB hub. But this little guy from Targus is pretty neat. It’s geared towards the Mac crowd with its color scheme, but that shouldn’t deter Windows or Linux folk. You can find other hubs on Amazon for cheaper, but it all boils down to form factor and what you’re looking for.

January 22, 2018 I bought this to keep two HDDs running daily and weekly incremental backups of my system, which I then rotate each week, storing them (using the disk storage items previously reviewed) in my fireproof, waterproof, safe.

I then replace them with the two new drives and repeat the cycle for the next week. This way I have bootable HDDs for my system with daily and weekly increments allowing me to go back in time as far as needed, along with my Time Machine backups.

So I should be fairly safe! I upgraded from the single HDD dock, which worked extremely well for a few years, so I anticipate the same solid performance from this dock.
