Very frustrating. After having used autoCAD for Mac for a little while now, and used happily for that matter, I have run into a very annoying problem after installing the first update to the software: It just keeps crashing.
Usually within a matter of minutes, sometimes a little longer I haven’t been able to use it longer then about 10 minutes at a time, before it fails. Sometimes it didn’t even start up at all. Very frustrating as it was working just fine before the update.
I searched the Autodesk to find out if it was a common problem, and to see if there was a fix for it. Turned out more people were having the same problem, but there was very little information to find. The only response from Autodesk was to contact them to see if they could help fix the issue. The only helpful piece of information I could dig up, was to uninstall AutoCAD for Mac ’11 and reinstalling the application without the new update. That seems to have done the trick for me, although I think it is a sad solution Hope Autodesk fixes this issue sometime soon.
Update: After installing OSX Lion, it pretty much broke my AutoCAD for Mac. Not workable anymore. Turns out AutoDesk recommended not to upgrade to Lion, but stick with Snow Leopard for now.
Or at least until they made the software compatible So for now back to Windows it is when needing to use AutoCAD Bummer. Update 2: Well, AutoCAD for Mac 2012 has been released. That makes this post obsolete, thankfully! Will have to give the new version a try (haven’t yet), and hopefully all the problems I had been having with the 2011 version will be solved. Or this is just a little wishful thinking on my part who knows. Update 3: See for my initial review of AutoCAD 2012 for Mac. The 2012 version took away most of my grievances!
I just installed update 2. I’d been forced to reinstall the original release after update 1 made the program unusable. Now, the program seems to function MUCH more smoothly and fasterexcept it crashes unexpectedly every 20 minutes or so. It doesn’t seem to be related to specific CAD commands.
I can simply start the software, and let it idleand it’ll blink out of existence with no warning after a measure of time. I’m assuming it’s another background MAC process that is causing itbut frankly, I’m not knowledgeable enough about these things to get excited about wasting my workday trying to suss this out. Autodesk again is no help, simply, uninstall and reinstall without the updates. Who does this? This is my livelihoodwho releases updates that are completely non-functional.
Does no one field test these things? Does Autodesk realize this is worse than not offering the software at all? I have been an Autocad user via VMware on my Apple Macbook Pro, but never very happy having to shuttle back to Windows land just for Autocad. Installed the Apple 2011 for Autocad trial version and started working to create blocks for an Ebeam mask (turning Vmware off). Everything went well on the small sized drawings until I started inserting my individual created cad blocks to create my final drawing.
AUtocad slowed way down. Trying to move the entire drawing from x1,y1 to x2,y2 was a real chore. X1,y1 was centered on a circle which I tried to use the CEN command (snap) to gain the x1,y1 coordinates even though its only a ~ 700kB drawing, the mouse movement was slow and jerky, taking several seconds to show an update of my hand/mouse movement, so I had to end up typing in the x1,y1 etc coordinates. Even then, I had to type x1, wait 20 seconds, type y1, etc and then it took a few minutes to move the blocks/drawing entities from x1,y1, to x2,y2. I have since opened several older drawings and find the same problem. Everything else on my macbookpro works very fast (photoshop, dreamweaver etc). I tried turning off the 3D aspects in autocad (my drawings are all 2D) and minimize any settings in autocad that I could conceive would effect speed- no luck.
I can’t find anything else in the autocad settings (boy, there just are not a lot of settings in this apple 2011 autocad compared to my Windows Autocad2008). I was pretty excited about the autocad for Apple, but I can’t use it for anything over a 150K drawing size.
My apple system details below. This apple should be more than enough. As for the copy and pasting between drawings, I encountered the same problem. This was only a problem for me if I let autoCAD connect to the autoDesk servers when opening the application.
